About our Council

St. John's Council #1345 was chartered on June 28, 1908 and serves the parishes of St. John's in Bergenfield, St. Mary's in Dumont and the SMA in Tenafly. We are a fraternal and charitable organization that provides support and manpower for charitable activities globally, nationally and throughout our local area.

Members are invited to to our regular membership meetings, held on the 3rd Monday of each month. Attendance affords members the opportunity to find out what is going on in the Council, a chance to get to know other members and see the opportunities available to get involved.The dress code is casual.

What We Do

Charitable Activities

  • Annual Donations to St. Mary’s Parish in Dumont & St. John’s Parish in Bergenfield and the SMA in Tenafly in support of the Church, school, food pantry, and youth ministry.

  • Annual Donations to Council Charities including the Social Services Depts. in Dumont and Bergenfield.  

  • Collection Drive for Developmentally Disabled Citizens with proceeds donated to organizations for the mentally handicapped.

  • Special Children’s Dance to benefit agencies for physically and mentally challenged children. 

Religious Activities

  • Right to Life March. We support the annual pilgrimage to Washington, DC each January in our fight against abortion with one or two buses of brother Knights, their families and parishioners.

  • We lead the rosary at St. Mary's Church on the first Friday of each month during Eucharistic Adoration.

  • Monuments to the Unborn.  Donated and erected monuments at St. Mary’s, St. John’s, and the SMA Fathers in Tenafly. 

  • Wake Services for departed brother knights at local funeral homes.  Members of the Council and our Chaplain provide a brief prayer service for the family.  

  • Annual Memorial Mass at the Council each November to honor deceased brother Knights of the past year. 

  • Corporate Communion & Breakfast.  Quarterly celebration of mass and breakfast with brother knights, their spouses and family alternating at our local churches.

  • Veteran’s Nursing Home in Paramus.  Support for the celebration of Mass on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month.

  • Promote “Keep Christ in Christmas” campaign with banners at local churches and lawn sign distribution.

  • Erect outdoor Nativity displays at Dumont Boro Hall and St. Mary’s church.

Family Activities

  • Annual Picnic for members, their family, and extended families and friends.

  • Friday Night Lenten Dinners.  Council members serve buffet dinners on select Fridays during Lent.  Proceeds help fund council charities.

Youth Activities

  • Council Sponsored Boy Scout Troop #1345
  • Father Murray Scholarship Fund for Columbian Squires attending Catholic high schools.
  • Council Scholarship Program, awarded annually for high School & college as a benefit for members. It is open to sons, daughters and grandchildren of members of St. John's Council.
  • Children’s Halloween Party.  Free costume party for boys and girls up to age 10.  
  • Children’s Christmas Party.  Free party with Santa visit and gifts for boys and girls up to age 10.

Social Activities

  • Regular Dinner Dances - moderately priced socials where members, spouses, and friends can have a great time with food, music and dancing at an affordable price, close to home.  
  • Friday Night Socials.  Casual gatherings in our Bar Lounge on Friday evenings for members, spouses, and friends.  A complimentary light snack is served around 9PM.
