Dumont Day - 2008
Dumont Day festivities will be held on September 13, 2008 and our Council sponsors a booth at Memorial Park at which we sell hamburgers and drinks. This is a major fund raiser for our Council and I ask all brothers who can help in working the booth that day to contact me or PGK George DiCostanzo.
Because the event will run into the evening this year, we will need lots of help setting up, managing the booth and breaking down.
Brothers, as I noted in my first Grand Knight’s address, we need your help for events like these. Please consider helping us at this important event which also keeps our Council in the forefront of the community.

Council Clam Bake & Picnic
The first Council Event this year will be on September 7, 2008. We are going to have a Clam Bake/ Cookout which will include a menu of hamburgers, hot dogs, and salads. I chose September 7th because this is the first “football weekend” of 2008 and it seems like a great time to get together after our summer break.
Please make your reservations early for our first Council event of the year. I have been told that a Clam Bake was successful in the past and I want to try a “little something different” for our Annual Council Picnic. (The price of this affair may be a little higher). Again, reservations are needed to get an accurate headcount. Contact me for reservations. “Spread the Word.”

Church Activities Report
Thanks to everyone for coming to the NJ Veteran’s Home on Sat, June 14 FLAG DAY to assist the Catholic veteran’s and making it possible for them to attend Sunday Mass. Special thanks to Fr. John Murray SMA for coming to celebrate the Mass there as he has done so many times before. And thanks to the 4th Degree Sir Knights of Bishop O’Connor Assembly #647 for joining us and participating in the Liturgy.
When we FLY THE FLAG, we remind ourselves of all the sacrifices these brave men and women made so that we can remain free. When we go to the Home, we make it possible for our Catholic Veteran’s to celebrate Sunday Mass.
When we come out to socialize with and aid the veteran’s to attend Mass, Our Order is appreciated by the Veteran’s, their family, and others who see us. We are like visible banners. Much like the American Flag flying, we appear to others as a symbol of being proud Americans and Fine Catholics.
Please remember for the summer, Jesus doesn’t go on vacation from us. Make it a good habit to come out as often as possible especially over the summer on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month to help at the Vets Masses in Paramus.
Thank you and God bless you. Let’s everyone have a safe and happy summer.

Other News

Latin Mass - Archbishop Myers has authorized the celebration of a Latin Mass at Our Lady of Victories Church, in Harrington Park.  The mass will be celebrated every third (3rd) Sunday and begin at 2:30pm.

Protocol
One of the things that set the Knights of Columbus apart from other organizations is our Protocol. Many of the Rules of Protocol that we follow were explained when we took our First Degree. Sometimes, we forget the way that we should conduct ourselves during a meeting.
The Grand Knight is the presiding officer during the meeting and he must keep control of the meeting. With the cooperation of the members, the meetings can flow quickly and efficiently.
If a member wishes to speak, he does so by rising from his seat, addressing the chair with “Worthy Grand Knight” and saluting at the same time. The GK will return the salute and acknowledge the member. At our Council we also observe saluting the Deputy Grand Knight. After saluting the GK, the member turns and salutes the Deputy GK. All questions and speech are directed through the GK. There is never any direct talk between members.
There may be other situations that arise that are not covered by a rule. But by applying common courtesy to each other, we cannot go wrong. Finally, we should show proper consideration for the office represented by the person.

Helpful Hints Trivia
Did you know……….
Rainy day cure for dog odor: next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.
Headache Pain: drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately, without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional pain relievers.
Burns: Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns.
Stuffed Nose: try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They’ll clear up your stuffed nose.
Sore Throat: mix ¼ cup of vinegar with ¼ cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.

Thank the Troops

If you did not get a chance to send a card in December, do it now in January……it’s never too late!

www.letssaythanks.com is a website that gives you the opportunity to send a FREE postcard to U.S. military personnel stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Show your support and appreciation for their service and sacrifice for our country. Your postcard will lift their spirits.

According to Xerox, the sponsors of this program, they have received millions of greeting cards for the troops, far exceeding their expectations.

It’s 3 simple steps. Pick a card design (drawn by children), pick a greeting, print your name and town, and send. That’s it.

When you’re in the website, check the links for Photos, and Messages from the Troops. You will see and read what effect these cards have on the troops. Don’t miss the opportunity.

George DiCostanzo, PFN, PGK

Remember our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. FREE cards and greetings are offered at The whole process takes less than 5 minutes. Try it and reach out to a service man or woman. Let them know we care.
